Add-on Private Helicopter Pilot
Already a fixed wing private pilot? Want to learn to fly as a hobby or purchase your own
helicopter? If so, this is probably the license you want. Many people get their private license to fly their family
and friends around town, or simply for pleasure.
Your current experience with general aviation makes this process easier if you already have a fixed wing license.
The radio calls, navigation, and airport procedures are all very similar.
This license allows you to fly any helicopter up to 12,500 pounds. You may share your flying expenses with your
passengers but you may not fly for hire. It is also the first step on the path to Commercial Pilot level. You need
to get your private license first, before you can work on your commercial rating.
Flying part-time, three to six times a month, this license can be obtained in about nine months. Flying full-time,
five days a week, you can get this rating in as little as two to three months.
Pre-Requisites:
You must:
Hold a valid fixed wing FAA Private Pilot Certificate
Accrue a total of 30 hours minimum to take the practical test
Must attain at least a 3rd class medical
