Add-on Certificate and Ratings

Already an airplane pilot? Want to add a helicopter certificate? The process is very simple, you do not need a written test for the Private, Instrument, or Commercial, the hour requirements are less, and since you already know how to fly, far less ground school is required. If you'd like to know more, give us a call and we'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Private Add-On

You need a minimum of 30 hours in a helicopter to obtain the Private add-on certificate.  Ten of these would need to be solo, the other twenty dual instruction.  Generally we find that most of our add-on pilots are around the minimum requirements but of course this does vary from student to student.

Commercial Add-On

FAA requirements are that you have 150 hours total time while 50 of those hours must be in a helicopter.  Of these hours, 35 must be Pilot-in-Command (PIC). The easiest process instead of going straight for the Commercial is to start with the Private, get the 10 hours PIC, then once you have the license any additional time is logged as PIC.

ATP Add-On

The FAA minimums for a helicopter ATP add on are:

1,200 hours total time
500 hours cross country
100 hours at night (15 of those must be in a helicopter)
200 hours in helicopters (75 hours Pilot-in-Command)
75 hours actual or simulated instrument (50 hours must be in an aircraft, of those 25 must be in a helicopter)

Most of the above time can be in airplanes (or gliders or anything else you want).  The main helicopter requirement is 200 hours, of which 25 must be actual/simulated instrument time, and 15 at night.

If you are current and comfortable flying IFR in an airplane, have the other time requirements, 10 hours is reasonable to complete this program.  We offer two ways to add the instrument rating, the Schweizer 300CBi and the Robinson R-44 Raven II.
