Add-on Certificate and Ratings Already an airplane pilot? Want to add a helicopter certificate? The process is very simple, you do not need a written test for the Private, Instrument, or Commercial, the hour requirements are less, and since you already know how to fly, far less ground school is required. Private Add-On You need a minimum of 30 hours in a helicopter to obtain the Private add-on certificate.  Ten of these would need to be solo, the other twenty dual instruction.  Generally we find that most of our add-on pilots are around the minimum requirements but of course this does vary from student to student. The easiest process instead of going straight for the Commercial is to start with the Private, get the 10 hours PIC, then once you have the license any additional time is logged as PIC. If you are current and comfortable flying IFR in an airplane, have the other time requirements, 10 hours is reasonable to complete this program.  We offer two ways to add the instrument rating, the Schweizer 300CBi and the Robinson R-44 Raven II.
